JRN 250 Assignment H: Current Event

Article Title: Trust in Media Returns to an All- Time Low: is Anyone Suprised?
I picked this article becasue like what this article goes into detail about I feel that we can really improve peoples trust in the media which is currently at and all time low and used to be the only thing people could trust in with the corrupt governements of the past.
Out of all the recent current events in the news during this course the thing that strikes me the most is what is currently in the news, Baltimore and Freddie Gray because people are past the point of how the whole ordeal happened and only focused on how much they hate police officers, I still don't know if Freddie had previous heath issues, why he was getting arrested in the first place, if he was in a recent car accident and if any of the police officers involved in the whole thing have a previous violent record. To me these things seem very important and no one has answered them. This just solidify's the lack of trust in the media, they should be reporting the most important information not whipping up a flashy article on the biggest and on trend news.
As a social media strategist my approach to the media is going to be to get all the facts, the be a PR specialist in my field and to be as transparent and honest to the public as a possible can be/ am allowed to be.

Undergraduate Certificate in Social Media (Soul Story)

CMLife my university newspaper recently did a feature story on the certificate I am currently pursuing as a part of my bachelors degree. The Undergraduate Certificate in Social Media, according to the article all the courses for this certificate were created by Mary Lichtman and its already helping students move up in their careers even though it was just created in 2012.

This article made me feel better about my decision to pursue the Undergraduate Certificate in Social Media here at Central Michigan University and really does pertain to my future. This article just helped me realize more and more what I am learning in these social media courses and how it can help me significantly in my future.

I decided to share this story with others in my social media class because it really does pertain to them as most of them are also pursuing the Social Media Certificate like I am. To get in contact with my classmates I've posted the link to my blog post in our class discussion board and I've also shared my post only Google+ where I am connected with most of them.

The audience for this article is anyone at Central Michigan University and off campus looking to expand their social media skills by pursuing the certificate. Because this article pertains to such a range of potential students the demographics could be all over the place but primarily Journalism, Business and Public Relations students at CMU from ages 18- 30 though it could be anyone with some interest in expanding their social media skills.

The Dress That Broke the Internet More Than Kim Kardashian's Paper Magazine Cover

Kim Kardashian attends the launch of THAT magazine
At the beginning of this past December Kim Kardashian's PAPER magazine cover was released with the intention of "breaking the internet" basically just causing a fuss on social media and getting people to talk and it worked. I felt like I would never stop seeing Kim Kardashian's butt on my news-feed. But, Kim K is nothing compared this new internet sensation most commonly known as "The Dress"
People are obsessed with this badly lit photo of a cheap mother of the bride dress and it's all over my Twitter feed. According to CNBC "The internet is divided" some see the actual colors of the dress, black and blue, when they see this dimly lit photo while others see white and gold. The dress debate started with a Tumblr post that proceeded to go viral with the help of mega- viral content producer Buzzfeed and now it's seemingly everywhere.
Personally I see the colors white and gold even though the dress is actually blue and black which I found out is because the rods in my eyes don't work well in dim light and are less light- sensitive than other peoples eyes.
It's crazy to me how something so ridiculous and unimportant can go viral so quickly while real issues in our country and others are looked over and harder to spread. Partly I feel this is because my generation and the generations below me have such a strong influence on the internet and many of us just don't really care or wish to know more about the terrible things going on in the world around us. This makes me sad but also gives me hope for how the internet and what type of content is important will change as my generation gets older and older.

The Girl With Two Middle Names

My name is Katia Frances- Lee Koerner.
When my parents found out I was a girl my mother wanted to name me Katerina and my father wanted to name me Knottia (an extremely German name). They decided on Katia because it kind of incorporated both of the names they wanted and is extremely German (I am over 70% of German heritage and this is important to my family and I).
My parents decided to give me the middle name Frances- Lee because Frances is the middle name of my grandmother on my mom's side and Lee is the middle name of my grandpa on my mom's side both of these names have been the middle names of my relatives for generations and hold significance in my family.
It's a name with many meanings and complications.
It's a name that is unique and strong.
I once hated my name: no one could say it, only ridiculous family's give their children two middle names, and I didn't think it fit me.

Now I know differently.

Literal Meaning
Katia: Pure, Unsullied
Frances: From France, French or free man
Lee: Healer, meadow or wood, lion, poetic, shelter, famous bearer
Koerner: (a German name), miller or grain merchant/ administrator

My Meaning
I think that my name says a lot about me, I think of the word pure for my first name and I think of being honest, truthful, independent and powerful. I think of my middle name Frances- Lee and I think of being a free and independent think and as someone who can hold as much leadership, poise and prowess as a lion in the jungle. I think of my last name in terms of being a very German family and a very hard worker.

I used to hate my name because no one could say it and it just seemed so unnecessarily complicated but now I think my name is a very HUGE part of my identity and I can't imagine my name being anything else.

I decided to post about my name this week because I am currently applying for a Social Media internship through my university's Greek Life office and I was thinking about how much a name can impact the way you are viewed, even before the interview and before meeting in person. This got me thinking about social media and how important it is that we portray ourselves professionally and how we want to be perceived online.

Germany

My sophomore year of high school I had a German exchange student named Friderieke. She came to my hometown in early October and stayed for 3 weeks with my family and I. It was a great experience having an exchange student in my home and since Friderieke my family has hosted 3 more students all from the same small German town of Lindenberg I'm Allgau. (The picture on this post is of my exchange partner, my fellow exchange student from my hometown (Lara) and I eating ice cream in Germany on a class trip)

I was in Germany on the exchange trip for three weeks staying in Lindenberg with Friderieke and the rest of my host family. I went on the trip with my sophomore year German class and after the educational part of the part of the trip my Aunt and Oma (Grandma) came and picked me up and I continued my German adventure for another week to visit my second cousins in Heilbronn and climb the Alps with my family.

I had a great time in Germany and my hope is to go back and visit again with my family after my Italy trip this summer!

FLORENCE, ITALY

This upcoming Summer of 2015 I will be studying abroad in Italy at Palazzi: Florence University of the Arts. While i'm there I will be taking a six- week class and traveling to Pienza, Pompeii, Parma, Modena, Versailles, Rome, Napoli and Capri as well as a few other places. I have always been extremely interested in travel (more specifically travel in Europe) and since I was younger I have loved learning about the culture of other countries and Greek/ Roman mythology. I'm really excited to be able to learn and travel in Italy and I can't wait to see some interesting historical landmarks during my trip there. The picture I've posted is of Florence, it's beautiful and I can't wait to see the view in person!
